24th annual Battle of the Badges kicks off Monday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The 24th annual Battle of the Badges kicks off Monday, Dec. 10, lasting through Saturday, Dec. 22.

Battles of the Badges is the longest-running local blood donation competition in Fort Wayne. When you donate blood during the campaign, you can vote for either police/highway patrol or firefighters/EMS to win the competition.

The annual rivalry helps ensure that blood donations keep at pace with demand during the holiday season.

Last year, firefighters/EMS won the competition over police/patrol by 62 donations. This year, the goal stands at 500 blood and platelet donations between the two Fort Wayne Red Cross locations.

In addition to saving lives, participants will also receive a Red Cross long-sleeved t-shirt and enjoy pizza provided by Pizza Hut, while supplies last.

  1. The author must be an Ohio native. In Indiana we have State Police, not Highway Patrol.
    Let’s go out and support our Law Enforcement officers, Firefighters, and EMS with this worthy cause.

      • It is the obligation of a reporter to get the correct information and report. Sometimes large organizations have errors, which local reporters can cure by correcting those errors.

        Often there is a local angle, as there so obviously is with this event, to a national release, With a phone call or two one can turn this into his or her own story, eliminating error and creating a better local draw.

        Darrin, I remember WOWO as having a fact gathering, accurate reporting news department. Not a group of persons who, just repeat a news release or rip and read from a wire or newspaper.

        So, I’ll not offer any additional comments. Instead I will be sad that radio news is NOT what it was.

        • I appreciate the feedback, and would like to assure you that we are still a fact-gathering and accurate organization. One typo does not change that.

          As for your comment on “rip and read,” we utilitze our partnerships with other media agencies to their fullest due to our limited staff. We greatly value our associations with them, such as our partnership with ABC 21.

          I am sorry we are apparently falling short of your standards and thank you for listening/reading.
