1955 Attucks Team to Be Honored at 500 Festival Parade

INDIANAPOLIS (AP):  The first all-black basketball team to win a state championship in the U.S. is receiving an honor that has been 60 years in the making.

Members of the 1955 Crispus Attucks team will serve as grand marshals of the IPL 500 Festival Parade Saturday in Indianapolis. The event is part of Indianapolis 500 celebrations.

Attucks won state championships in 1955 and 1956, when it went undefeated. It was the first Indianapolis team to take home the title.

Star Oscar Robertson says a parade for the champions both years wound around Monument Circle downtown but didn't stop for a celebration as parades for white teams had. It continued to a city park instead.

Team member John Gipson says the 500 Festival parade is “another first'' for the team.
