19-year-old Dies in Spencer County Boating Accident

SPENCER COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A Boonville teen is dead after a boating accident on the Ohio River Sunday. Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the boating accident where investigators say 19-year-old Garrett Ward, along with friends, was boating to an area of the Ohio River known as the “French Islands” and had beached on the lower end of the south island. Just before 6:00 P.M., the group decided to leave the island, and as the driver, 22-year-old Christopher Payne, also of Boonville, began to back the boat away, Ward became tangled in the motor's propeller. Emergency crews were called, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is being done Monday. Officers say alcohol was determined to be a factor in the accident. Payne was taken to the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office and incarcerated for C Felony “Boating While Intoxicated Causing Death”. The accident remains under investigation.
