INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana Supreme Court Justice Brent E. Dickson says he'll retire from the bench on April 29.
Dickson announced the date in a letter to Gov. Mike Pence Monday. He that should give the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission time to nominate three candidates to succeed him and for Pence to select his successor.
Dickson earlier had announced that he would retire sometime in the spring before reaching the court's mandatory retirement age of 75. Dickson turns 75 in July.
He's the second-longest-serving Indiana Supreme Court justice in history after joining the state's highest court 30 years ago in January 1986. The longest-serving justice was 19th century Justice Isaac Blackford, who served more than 35 years.
Dickson also served as chief justice for more than two years.
