FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Indiana House passed the “Safe Haven Law,” allowing parents to legally and confidentially give up their newborns at fire stations, police departments and hospitals.

The House unanimously passed a bill that would give desperate parents one last option before abandoning their newborns, by putting their baby in a “Safe Haven Baby Box.” The box acts as temporary quasi-incubator, to be located at any Safe Haven location.

Fort Wayne firefighter and paramedic Monica Kelsey says not enough parents know about the law, and there needs to be more options for desperate parents.

If the law is passed, supporters say a total of 100 privately funded boxes will become available by July 2016.
