ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WOWO): The owner of Darrin‘s Coffee Company in Zionsville is accused of selling an unlicensed investment in a real estate development scam.
The arrest of Darrin Marion of Indianapolis stems from an ongoing investigation by the Secretary of State‘s Prosecution Assistance Unit. "He is accused of engaging and selling investments that were not registered. He‘s also accused of selling an investment and not being a registered broker himself," said Secretary of State Connie Lawson.
Marion was permanently banned from the securities industry in 2008. His registration has been terminated the previous year due to criminal acts involving the use of a client‘s identity, though it isn‘t clear if he was charged with a crime at the time. Lawson says they received a complaint from the college roommate of Marion‘s father about a real estate investment in Texas that Marion was supposed to make for him. "He was not getting any response from Darrin, and I believe he had gone to offices and Darrin‘s home, and both seemed to be vacant," Lawson said. Marion was eventually arrested after charges were filed by the Marion County Prosecutors Office.
Lawson says the victim lost about $100,000 in the deal, and she says Marion is still under investigation. "We don‘t know how many victims there are. But that‘s why we wanted to get the word out so that anyone who invested money with Marion can call our office."
