Lugar Says Weapons Threat Still a Big Concern Created by kblakeslee on 2/26/2014 2:09:14 PM
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Former senators Richard Lugar of Indiana and Sam Nunn of Georgia say they're pleased that efforts to disarm Ukraine of its nuclear weapons worked two decades ago, but they caution that the threat from weapons of mass destruction around the world is still high.
The former senators spoke Tuesday at the University of Indianapolis, where Lugar is a distinguished professor.
The Indiana Republican and Georgia Democrat partnered for the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction in the early 1990s. The program is credited with eliminating about 10,000 weapons of mass destruction before it expired last year.
The Indianapolis Star reports Lugar and Nunn are worried about the increasing ease with which people can build weapons of mass destruction and about nuclear weapons that Pakistan and North Korea have.
