Pence Looks to Expand Education Overhaul Created by kblakeslee on 12/10/2013 1:25:07 PM
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Mike Pence is asking Indiana lawmakers to approve more aid for charter schools, school vouchers for preschool-aged children and a host of other measures that build on the sweeping education changes approved in 2011.
Pence said Tuesday that the state must continue expanding on alternatives to traditional public schools as a means to improve education. He outlined the proposals in prepared remarks he was expected to give Tuesday at Indiana's original state capital building in Corydon.
The governor also is continuing his push to improve technical training in Indiana schools.
The new proposals come as Democratic state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz and the Pence administration have been locked in an ongoing fight over control of education policy.
