INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Communities across the country are discussing how to improve the health of the nation as part of this week's observance of National Public Health Week.

Indiana Health Commissioner William VanNess says not everyone understands the term public health. It encompasses food and water safety, response to emergencies, tracking and responding to infectious diseases and preventing diseases, among other areas.

This year's public health week will focus on the economic impact of health and the role people have to support public health and prevention. The first day of the week centered on family health and proper home preparations.

The state health department recommends keeping your home smoke free, immunizing your children, stocking refrigerators fruits and vegetables and practicing safe food handling techniques.
