INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Gov. Mike Pence is urging Indiana's often-divided education leaders to work together to prevent the state from losing its waiver from the national No Child Left Behind law.
Pence said Friday that he was ``disappointed and concerned'' by findings in a U.S. Department of Education report that found Indiana had failed to meet the conditions of its waiver.
A letter sent to schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz says the waiver is on conditional status and warns that a failure to resolve the issues could cost the state its exemption.
Pence says the State Board of Education and the Indiana Department of Education must make preserving the waiver the ``highest priority.'' The state has 60 days to present the federal department with its plans to address the deficiencies.
