Indiana Bill Aims to Combat Gangs in State's Schools

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana lawmakers are considering a bill that aims to keep gangs and gang activity out of the state's public schools.

State Sen. Brandt Hershman is sponsoring the measure, which was passed unanimously last week by the full Senate and is now before the Indiana House. The Buck Creek Republican's bill would allow the Indiana Safe Schools Fund to provide educational outreach and training so that school personnel can better identify and prevent criminal gang activity.

The measure also would require school boards to put in place anti-gang policies and awareness programs using materials developed by the Indiana Department of Education.

Hershman tells the Journal & Courier his bill is ``a tool to help the problem before it gets out of hand.''
