House Budget Lawmakers Set for Medicaid Briefing
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Members of the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee are getting an update on Medicaid spending as they work on the state's next two-year budget.
The panel is scheduled to meet Tuesday morning to receive a forecast on how much the federal-state health care program is spending in Indiana.
An actuary hired by the state has estimated lawmakers will have to find an additional $600 million over the next seven years to cover the costs of low-income Hoosiers who are forced into Medicaid by the health care law's individual mandate.
Milliman Inc. estimates that about 90,000 Indiana residents already qualify for Medicaid but have never enrolled. The actuarial firm predicts the individual mandate will push them to enroll.
Lawmakers also are considering expanding the program's Indiana eligibility requirements.
