Indiana Considering New Highway Ramp Design
GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana highway officials are considering building two new highway ramps with a cost-saving design that would be new to the state.
The Indianapolis Star reports that planners are discussing building a diverging diamond interchange along Interstate 65 in Greenwood.
Such interchanges crisscross east- and west-bound lanes to allow cars to enter highways without turning left in front of oncoming traffic. A similar project is also planned along Interstate 69 in Fort Wayne.
Seven other states have built the interchanges, which are typically cheaper to build than traditional designs. They can also be safer and help ease traffic.
The Indiana Department of Transportation will hold public meetings to get feedback before deciding whether to adopt the new designs. If the interchange proposals are approved, they could open by 2014.
