More Rules After The Indiana Fair Stage Collapse?
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana lawmakers pondering new rules governing the type of temporary outdoor stage rigging involved in last summer's deadly State Fair stage collapse say they want to make sure the state doesn't overwhelm smaller events like county fairs with regulations.
A legislative committee met Thursday at the Statehouse to review emergency rules the state imposed earlier this year, along with international guidelines. The committee will recommend permanent rules to the General Assembly.
Democratic Rep. Bill Davis of Portland says he wants assurances that the Fire and Building Safety Commission won't treat every county fair like the Super Bowl.
State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says smaller stages would be exempt from certain requirements.
The August 2011 State Fair accident killed seven people and injured nearly 60 others before a scheduled Sugarland concert.
