FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): While people are finalizing their Super Bowl plans, the Indiana State Police has some tips for staying safe during Super Bowl Sunday.

During Super Bowl weekend last year, there were 740 vehicle collisions. Forty-five of those were related to alcohol.

Police, the Governor’s Council and Indiana Criminal Justice Institute are asking drivers to drive sober.

“With increased celebration comes an even greater responsibility to do so safely”, said Lieutenant Tony Casto, Fort Wayne District Commander.

Casto also said drinking and driving don’t mix well and driving sober will keep Indiana roadways safe.

Here are some tips on how to stay safe for the big game:

  • Before the celebration begins, plan a safe way home
  • Do not drive impaired
  • If you do drink, use a taxi, public transportation, ride sharing service or designate a sober friend or family member, and give them your keys
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911
  • If you know someone who is about to drive or ride impaired, take their keys and help make arrangements to get them home safely
