FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne is promoting mental health awareness during the month of October.

The 26th Annual Mental Health Day at IPFW is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 in Walb Student Union, according to an IPFW press release.

The theme of the day is “R.E.F.R.E.S.H.,” which stands for resilience, eating well, fitness, rest entertainment, support and hygiene. The event is part of National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month.

The month of October is dedicated to educating people how to seek assistance for themselves or give support. A resource fair, one-on-one depression and anxiety screenings, a mental health spa and therapy dogs will be offered. There will also be educational pep talks from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s estimated that one in four young adults have a diagnosable mental illness,” said Judy Tillapaugh, IPFW’s wellness/fitness coordinator. “Knowing this, our planning committee offers IPFW Mental Health Day to guide students and others towards better mental health, so their struggles don’t affect their ability to be successful at work, with relationships, or at school.”

A complimentary lunch is included in the event. The public is invited to attend.
